  • Closed captioned DVDs and videos.  Search for them in our catalog, using the term "closed captioned."
  • Books, DVDs and/or information on Deaf culture, deaf history, cochlear implants, hearing loss, American Sign Language, cued speech and lipreading.  Search for them in our catalog.
  • Periodicals on topics related to the deaf and hard of hearing community at the Rockville Memorial Library.  See also our electronic Articles from Magazines and Newspapers.
  • See Reader's Cafe for suggestions of a variety of reading materials.

You can request materials for pick-up at your local branch.  See instructions for placing holds. To browse a larger collection of materials related to Deaf culture, deaf history, hearing loss and communication options, you may want to visit the Rockville Memorial Library.


Get Involved

Services to Deaf People with Low Vision or Blindness

Braille Books are available through the Library of Congress Braille Books program at the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. Fill out the application form to register. 

Duxbury Translation Software, which translates print to braille, is available at the Rockville Memorial Library's Computer Lab.   Email the Disability Resource Center to schedule an appointment. 

Closed Circuit TV, which enlarges the size of printed text, is available on the second floor of the Rockville Memorial Library.

Close Vision Interpreting and Tactile Interpreters are available for any library-sponsored programs. Use this form to request an interpreter preferably at least 3 workdays in advance.

Large Print Books from the library collection can be placed on hold in MCPL's online catalog and sent to any library branch for you.

Magnifiers for use in the libraries may be requested at the Information Desks.

Library handouts: To request library produced materials in accessible formats, such as Braille, large type, electronic files, or other reasonable accommodations, contact the host library five work days in advance.
