How MCPL Arranges Children's Books
MCPL shelves children's books in the following sections. Your child's interests or reading level may lead him or her to choose books from any section. Grade levels below are suggestions only.
Board Books (Babies & Toddlers)
Picture Books (Everyone loves picture books!) - There are often separate sections for alphabet and counting books.
Beginning Readers (Preschoolers through 2nd grade) - These titles have a limited vocabulary and many illustrations.
Easy Juvenile (2nd through 4th grade) - These titles usually are longer and have more complex vocabulary than beginning readers, and they usually have more illustrations than juvenile fiction.
Juvenile Fiction (2nd through 6th grade) - Some branches have special sections for mysteries and science fiction while others keep all the fiction together.
Juvenile Nonfiction (Babies through 6th grade) - Factual books are shelved by subject classification, not by reading level.
Children's Media (Babies through 6th grade) - Audiobooks, music CDs, Playaways, DVDs, and language learning materials.
