Montgomery County Public Libraries’ collection of graphic novels for all ages has been expanded by more than 230 copies thanks to a donation by the Bethesda-based Small Press Expo.  Graphic novels are works of fiction and non-fiction presented through sequential art.

MCPL Director Parker Hamilton accepted the donation from Warren Bernard, Executive Director of the Small Press Expo, on September 6.

The Small Press Expo is an alternative comics convention held every September or October in Bethesda.  It is a premiere event for alternative comic creators and fans. The SPX, founded in 1994 by a group of Washington-Baltimore area retailers, promotes diversity in the comics marketplace.  This year’s Expo will be held on September 10th and 11th at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.

Working with Bernard, MCPL's collections staff was able to select exactly what was needed and had been requested by the public.

“Montgomery County Public Libraries is pleased to be the first recipient of the new Small Press Expo Library Gift Program.  This is an example of how local businesses can support our libraries during these difficult economic times,” said Parker Hamilton, MCPL Director.

“The Small Press Expo is especially proud to make Montgomery County Public Libraries the first recipient of the SPX Graphic Novel Gift Program,” said Bernard.  “Montgomery County has been the home of SPX since its inception, so it was only appropriate that we start this new program here.  MCPL has a fantastic awareness of the power of graphic novels for its readers, as was evidenced by MCPL staff’s deep knowledge of the genre as they went through the process of choosing the books for this program.  We hope the readers of Montgomery County enjoy these new additions to the graphic novel section of their local libraries.”
